Condolence From: Jim Pitts

Condolence: Ever since I met Joe in Connecticut at Exxon Chemical in the late ‘80s, we’ve exchanged e-mails about everything under the sun, though mostly about books, writers, writing and red wine. Joe, an author himself, was a wonderful writer, a master of English and the most literate person I’ve ever known. A battle-scarred Vietnam vet, a member of Mensa and a worldwide marathon runner, Joe was a Renaissance man gifted with an original (sometimes cynical) sense of humor. Though a devout Catholic, his secular saint was Thomas Wolfe, whose Look Homeward, Angel he read like daily vespers. No doubt Joe Gillan is sipping heavenly wine (red), telling jokes and quoting Wolfe to the angels. I miss Joe mightily and will always remember him.

Condolence From: Darlene Mills

Condolence: I had the pleasure of working with Joe in the ExxonMobil DC office for several years. Joe always managed to make sure the day included laughter which put smiles on our faces. I learned very quickly that Joe's children were the first priority in his life and he was always singing their praises. Although he spoke of all his children, I was fortunate to get to know his wonderful daughter Jen. We three had many laughs and we looked forward to Jen's visits to the office. I offer my prayers; sympathy and fondest memories to all of Joe's family.
